Geneva College Men's Rugby should look proudly on the success they had this season!
Taking the second seed headed into playoffs with a decisive win over a solid Saint Vincent College in the first round of playoffs, only to be knocked out by a powerful Robert Morris University is nothing to hang their heads over. Holding a record of 3-2 (Overall 3-3) is a step up from last season where they failed to win a matchup in the Fall of 2023, due to injury and struggling numbers. Finishing in the top four of the ARU Challenge Cup, Geneva's season was a significant step forward for the program.
This season has seen tremendous growth for all individuals and for the team as a whole. Going from last season, where Geneva could barely scrape together a starting 15, to now having 24 rostered players, shows the team's desire to grow. With the addition of 7 freshmen this Fall and 2 upper classmen (9 new players in total), the team shows incredible promise, as only one of the 24 rostered players will be graduating this Fall. If Geneva continues to bind together and grow the club, there is a bright future ahead for the Golden Tornadoes!
Honoring the Senior:
Carter Milroy is Geneva Rugby's lone graduating senior.
Carter was a breakout star of the year for Geneva Rugby. In his first ever season of rugby, he proved to be our greatest weapon. He led the team with 8 tries (40 points) and nearly never missed a tackle. His presence was vital on both sides of the field, being able to make scores happen out of nothing and making incredible line breaks, as well as making important tackles all over the field. Carter had two tries this season in which he returned kickoffs for tries all by himself in separate matches. His tackling was top notch, and his passing was solid, even being required to step in at flyhalf when needed (impressive considering he had not touched a rugby ball before this Fall!). His field awareness allowed him to make things happen, whether breaking the line for his own score or being able to hit crucial passes for someone else to notch the score. Watching him play, you would have never guessed that he had not played rugby before. Above all, Carter is the best teammate you could ask for - quick to hype the others up and selfless on the field. Even though he was a natural at scoring, he valued seeing others score and succeed as well! He will be greatly missed by the team next year!!!
As the Fall season comes to an end, Geneva Rugby is getting hungry for the approaching 7s season. With the personnel on the team this year, 7s matchups look to be an exciting opportunity to showcase what Geneva Rugby can do!
Check back in next semester, as the Spring 2025 season will begin!
