Geneva College Men's Rugby traveled to Frostburg State University on September 20, 2025.
The Geneva College Men’s Rugby Club took the field against Frostburg State University and came away on the wrong end of a 58–5 result.
Frostburg’s size and pace proved to be the decisive factors throughout the match, creating consistent challenges for Geneva on both sides of the ball. With several new players earning their first starts and only a slim bench available, Geneva entered the match already facing an uphill battle.
Frostburg controlled much of the first half, pinning Geneva deep in their own territory. Rarely able to push past midfield, Geneva spent most of the half on defense and conceded multiple scores as Frostburg capitalized on line breaks and quick support play.
In the second half, Geneva showed renewed energy and began to string phases together more cohesively. Their effort was rewarded when a sharp defensive read led to a beautiful interception try - the lone score for Geneva. Despite the improved cohesion, Frostburg’s speed and power in open play continued to stretch Geneva’s defense, leading to more tries and putting the match out of reach.
Though the scoreboard was lopsided, Geneva demonstrated resilience, improved communication, and glimpses of the style of play they aim to build on. With continued experience for new players, the team looks to tighten its defense and generate more attacking momentum in the matches ahead.
Man of the Match: Nate McFarland, Freshman Wing, made his debut in his first rugby match with his first start. Nate made incredible defensive efforts, leading the way by cleaning up from the back field. On the other side of the field, he is proving to be an up-and-coming offensive talent.
Try Scorer:
Zion Haley (Junior Inside Center) – 1 Try
Conversions:
Michael Mann (Senior Fly-Half) – 0/1
Looking Ahead: Geneva College will travel to SUNY Fredonia next weekend.
The match will be played at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 27th.
