Geneva College Men's Rugby traveled to SUNY Fredonia on September 27, 2025.
The Geneva College men’s rugby team faced off against SUNY Fredonia this weekend, falling in a competitive contest by a score of 46–33. At halftime, the match remained within a single score, with Fredonia holding a narrow 17–14 lead.
Geneva’s attack looked much improved, finding rhythm and putting points on the board more consistently than in earlier outings. However, familiar struggles on defense again proved costly, as missed tackles and conceded line breaks gave Fredonia too many scoring opportunities.
The match was marked by a physical and, at times, undisciplined style of play from Fredonia. Despite the challenge, Geneva couldn’t quite summon the edge needed to push back and close the gap late in the match.
There were still plenty of bright moments for the Golden Tornadoes. Several new additions to the squad stepped up with intensity on both sides of the ball. Freshman Nate McFarland crossed the try line for his first collegiate score, while senior Frank Williams sparked a brilliant sequence with a defensive scramble and a well-placed kick. Sophomore Todd Bupp finished the play with another kick ahead and grounding for a highlight-reel try.
Although Geneva ultimately came up short, the 46–33 final marked the closest contest of the season thus far. With the offense showing signs of growth and fresh faces making an impact, the team will look to tighten its defense and carry momentum into the next match.
Man of the Match: Zion Haley, Junior Outside Center, has been a staple on the team for two years as a regular try scorer and try stopper. This match was no different as Zion secured two tries and had many vital tackles in the backfield. His toughness and ability on the field have earned him the honor for today's match.
Try Scorers:
Zion Haley (Junior Outside Center) – 2 Tries
Frank Williams (Senior Inside Center) - 1 Try
Todd Bupp (Sophomore Wing) - 1 Try
Nate McFarland (Freshman Wing) - 1 Try
Conversions:
Michael Mann (Senior Fly-Half) – 4/5
Looking Ahead: Geneva College will host Grove City College next weekend. The match will be played with an early start at 8:30 AM on Saturday, October 4th.
